Operations Analysis

Trade Space Studies

Commercial and government clients frequently need Operations Analysis based studies to identify trade space among various options to support force structure requirements, weapons procurement decisions, resource requirements decisions, and assessment of best return on investment for technology investment alternatives. For example, the Navy required alternatives to meet mine warfare requirements as articulated in visions statements and to meet Joint warfighting requirements to assure access to the littorals; the Air Force and Army required analysis to determine the optimal mix of cargo aircraft to meet ground force support requirements. The services needed to know the available trade space in selecting one alternative over the other. Studies such as these identify impacts and provide recommendations for alternative options (to include risk, costs). In these types of studies, roadmaps"are developed providing options and recommendations for the near, mid, and far term.

The approach for such studies requires that a baseline of current capabilities be established followed by excursions varying the number and type of assets, environment, and threat to determine the best and most efficient force to counter the a threat within a particular region and a given timeframe. Planning constraints are applied and varied to determine what force structure adjustments could be made to improve the modeled timelines. To assist in this task, a desktop compatible deterministic model is developed to allow for quick variations of systems, platforms, and scenarios. Known and expected performance parameters of current and future systems are modeled against a changing environment and threat.

Results of these studies provide options based on maximizing current forces and next generation capabilities given the National Security Strategy and Secretary of Defense goals.
